Tout projet de nationalisme symphonique implique une médiation complexe entre des cultures largement disparates. La conception d’une œuvre comme la Première symphonie de Sibelius, par exemple, a requis une négociation entre la culture originaire du « peuple » présumé (exemplifié dans les formules redécouvertes de la récitation du Kalevala, avec sa revendication d’authenticité construite au xixe siècle) et les attentes sophistiquées de culture élitiste urbaine de la musique savante européenne. Cet article fait l’hypothèse d’un modèle pour comprendre ces négociations (en tant qu’« invention de la tradition ») et illustre leur application analytique par un examen attentif de certains passages de la Première symphonie.

All projects of symphonic nationalism necessitate a complicated mediation between widely disparate cultures. Creating such a work as Sibelius’s First Symphony, for example, involved a process of negotiation between, at the extremes, the originary culture of the presumed “folk” (exemplified in the recovered musical formulas of Kalevala recitation, with its own nineteenth-century, constructed claims to authenticity) and the sophisticated expectations of the urban-elite culture of European art music. This essay posits a model for understanding these negotiations (as part of the “invention of tradition”) and illustrates their analytical applicability through close looks at some passages from the First Symphony.
