Textuellement, le refrain a subi de profondes évolutions au cours du xxe siècle, jusqu’à parfois disparaître des chansons même les plus populaires, en atténuant notamment ses critères de longueur, d’invariance et d’autonomie. Pourtant sa nécessité générique, sa valeur emblématique, son efficacité commerciale interdisent son effacement complet. On le voit donc rejaillir sous des aspects divers qui jalonnent la chanson et dans lesquels la mise en voix et la mise en musique ont une grande part sur sa perception par l’auditeur. Le refrain et tous ses avatars assurent alors au sein de la chanson de multiples fonctions, souvent imprévisibles mais toujours pertinentes.

From the point of view of the text, the refrain has undergone considerable changes during the 20th century, up to the point of sometimes even disappearing even in the most popular songs. Its traditional characteristics (length, invariability and autonomy) have been deeply altered. However, because it forms an efficient marker of the genre and also because of its symbolic, esthetic and commercial value, it was never totally eradicated. It returns under various guises, punctuating the song and rendered easily recognizable by the vocal and musical settings. The refrain and its various transformations ensure in the song multiple functions, often unpredictable but always pertinent.
